St. John The Baptist Primary School Needs Safer Traffic Measures
We would like to see Leicester City Council's Safer Streets scheme implement safer traffic/traffic calming measures on the roads surrounding St. John the Baptist Primary School in Clarendon Park.
As a parent of a child at this school, we received communication in early October that Safer Streets are implementing traffic calming measures to other local schools i.e. Overdale and Thomas Moore Primary Schools in South Knighton. We do not understand why St. John's has not been included in this scheme, given it's geographical position which is closer to the city centre, between A6/London Road and Queen's Road, and subject to much higher levels of traffic congestion and all the problems related to this.
On daily drop offs/pick ups, we have witnessed near misses involving dangerous driving affecting pedestrians and cyclists on these roads. Last week, my husband and I witnessed very bad aggression between drivers on Clarendon Park road which escalated to shouting and near physical violence, whilst children were being dropped off at the school gates. It is a safeguarding issue for children who witness this kind of behaviour and has the potential to cause emotional harm.
In light of the emerging climate crisis, the impact of environmental pollution on lung health and the risk of injury and potentially death due to accidents, we feel that Leicester City Council should take the needs of children who attend St. John's more seriously by ensuring that the roads are safer around this school.
