I am a proud country person: deeply connected to my roots and the simple yet profound lifestyle that comes with it. One way that I express myself and this identity is through wearing hats and ball caps adorned with fish hooks to school. This seemingly small act is significant to me and many others who identify with the country lifestyle.

Currently, many school authorities discourage or outright ban such adornments. This not only infringes on our freedom of expression, it assaults our country identity and sense of belonging. In schools across America, students are taught the values of diversity and self-expression, yet we are forced to conform to a defined norm when it comes to our attire.

There is no recorded incident of harm resulting from these adornments. As noted in a 2012 study published in the Journal of Adolescent Research, school uniforms and rigorous dress codes often do little to improve school safety or student behavior, but they may hinder students' self-expression (JAR, 2012).

The request here is not radical. We are asking for the freedom to wear hats and ball caps, especially those with fish hooks, to school as an expression of our country identity.
