In Illinois, the sale and use of fireworks are heavily restricted to those possessing a valid permit due to safety concerns. Despite this, neighboring states allow their sale, leading to circumvention of our laws. We believe that it is time to revisit and modernize our laws, based on successful regulatory examples in other states. By implementing comprehensive safety measures, we can legalize the sale of fireworks to adults, specifically those aged 21 or older, in Illinois. Currently, a third of US states have laws which allow the sale of consumer fireworks to adults. Data from these states shows that with proper safety information and regulatory compliance, injuries can be kept low. This will maintain public safety whilst allowing adults free enjoyment of fireworks. It could also provide an economic boost to Illinois businesses.
