Nowhere in the world could the odd, lovable, and threatened platypus feel more at risk than in its current situation. The platypus population is under threat due to habitat degradation, pollution, among other factors, and legalizing platypus pet ownership, with proper licensing and care, can help in their conservation.

Platypuses, native to Australia, are known to be one of the few mammals that lay eggs. They belong to the monotreme family of mammals and are truly unique creatures in the animal kingdom. The IUCN Red List cites them as a Near-Threatened species, primarily due to habitat loss and climate change. In every country around the world, keeping a platypus is illegal, even in Australia. However, the platypus population continues to face struggle after struggle, including low birth rates. I feel the best way to help is to put platypuses in competent hands around the world where they can be safe and cared for, and the population can be given the chance to recover.

In the United States of America, failings in the animal rights and ownership regulation system have bred a culture where such exotic pets are illegal, including platypuses. However, responsible pet ownership should never be outlawed. Instead, a strict licensing system that ensures a potential platypus owner's ability to provide appropriate care for the species should be incorporated into our legal framework.

Therefore, through this petition, we are calling for the United States government to recognize a path to legal, responsible platypus ownership.  With comprehensive assessment of a prospective pet owner's expertise, resources, and commitment to providing a suitable habitat to the platypus, the existence of this uniquely interesting species can be significantly safeguarded.
