Legalize the Joyce Farmer’s Market

The Issue

This property (54292 Hwy 112) was incorrectly zoned when the new Comprehensive Land Plan was enacted in 1995. The property was operating as a commercial enterprise until 1998 and had been operating as such for 30 years prior to that. This is a seasonal, one day a week market that operates no more than 64 hours a year and is vital to our rural community.   Farmer’s Markets provide invaluable service and economic support to rural communities. 

The Joyce Farmer’s Market operated for two seasons and provided the community with fresh vegetables, perishable foods, and artisan goods and crafts.  The Department of Community Development (DCD) decided that this activity was not allowed on the property without a conditional use permit.  

We call on the Department of Community Development to allow the Joyce Farmer’s Market to operate outright without a conditional use permit.
