British Columbia is facing a severe housing crisis, and responsible residents who rely on RVs and tiny homes for safe, affordable living are being pushed out by outdated regulations. I’m one of them. After years of unsafe roommate situations and unaffordable rentals, I found stability in my own well‑maintained 5th wheel — a home I’m proud to own. But full‑time RV living is increasingly restricted, and tiny homes have no legal place to exist. These rules are forcing people into homelessness even when they already have safe, responsible housing. BC needs modern, compassionate housing solutions now.

Affordable housing in BC has become nearly impossible to find, especially for people in lower income brackets or those with small pets. My options have always been extremely limited. For years, I was forced into roommate situations just to survive — and some of those experiences were frightening and traumatic. One roommate stole from me, threatened me during alcohol‑fueled rages, damaged my vehicle, and terrorized my pets when I wasn’t home. Another landlord struggled with severe mental health issues and repeatedly accused her tenants of trying to harm her. After enough dangerous and unstable situations, I knew I needed to live alone for my own mental health, safety, and for the wellbeing of my pets. But traditional housing was financially out of reach.

A friend helped me clean up an old motorhome, and I lived in it for a couple of years in an older, affordable RV park. My home was cramped, cold, and isolated in the shadow of the mountains for most of each day — but it was peaceful. For the first time in years, I felt safe. No roommates, no threats, no constant tension. Just quiet, stability, and the ability to breathe again.

After two years, I was finally able to upgrade to a newer 5th wheel — a home I am proud to own and keep beautifully maintained. It’s safe, clean, comfortable, and mine. I take pride in caring for it because it represents stability, independence, and dignity after years of uncertainty. But even with a well‑maintained home, finding an RV park that allows full‑time living and has available space is incredibly difficult. I was very fortunate to eventually find a spot in a sunny, welcoming park, and I count my blessings every day.

Across BC, RV parks are still restricted by outdated rules: residents are supposed to stay a maximum of six months and must have another residence elsewhere. In many parks, enforcement of these rules has increased. When a long‑term RVer moves out, their space often must go to a short‑term vacationer — not someone who needs affordable housing.

So what is a person supposed to do when they can’t afford traditional rentals, RV living is restricted, and tiny homes have no legal place to exist? It’s no surprise homelessness is becoming an epidemic. Seniors, in particular, are being pushed into homelessness at alarming rates. People who have found safe, responsible, self‑contained housing options are being told they cannot legally live in them.

This is not sustainable. Something needs to change — urgently.

• Update outdated RV park regulations to allow legal full‑time residency for responsible, long‑term tenants.
• Create clear, safe zoning options for tiny homes so owners have legal places to live.
• Work with municipalities to support affordable alternative housing as part of BC’s broader housing strategy.
• Protect seniors, low‑income residents, and people with pets from being displaced when they already have safe, self‑contained homes.
• Recognize RVs and tiny homes as legitimate, sustainable housing options for those who choose them.

It is a general, province‑wide call for modernized housing regulations that support both responsible residents and RV park operators. My goal is to advocate for safe, legal, affordable housing options — not to cause enforcement actions or jeopardize anyone’s home.

Please consider modernizing BC’s housing regulations to allow responsible full‑time RV and tiny‑home living. Many residents — including seniors, low‑income individuals, and people with pets — rely on these safe, self‑contained homes as their only affordable housing option.

Outdated rules are forcing people into homelessness even when they already have stable, well‑maintained homes. This is happening at a time when BC is facing one of the most severe housing crises in its history.

Updating RV park residency limits and creating legal zoning pathways for tiny homes would immediately help thousands of British Columbians who are doing everything right — maintaining their homes, following park rules, and simply trying to live safely and affordably.
