Legalize Raccoon Ownership as Pets in Alaska

Legalize Raccoon Ownership as Pets in Alaska
The Issue
I grew up in Washington State, where wild raccoons were a common sight. Despite their wild nature, they were never violent and even played a helpful role in cleaning up after other animals. Now, I live in Alaska with my girlfriend who suffers from anxiety issues. We've tried having cats but they haven't been much help. However, I've observed her interaction with raccoons and it's clear that these creatures could be a better fit to help her cope with her anxiety.
Raccoons are intelligent animals known for their problem-solving skills and adaptability (National Geographic). They can form strong bonds with humans when raised from an early age - similar to dogs or cats. Yet, owning a raccoon as a pet is currently illegal in Alaska under the state's exotic animal laws.
We believe that changing this law would not only benefit individuals like my girlfriend but also potentially provide homes for orphaned or injured raccoons that cannot be released back into the wild.
It's time we reconsider our laws regarding pet ownership and recognize the potential benefits of unconventional pets like raccoons. By signing this petition, you're supporting our cause to legalize owning raccoons as pets in Alaska – helping both humans who could benefit from such companionship and the animals themselves who may need care and shelter.
