Legalize Mutual Combat in Indiana to Restore Civil Discourse

The Issue

I am a firm believer in the power of direct conflict resolution and personal responsibility. Over the years, many of us have witnessed how social media and indirect methods of communication have eroded our civility, decency, and consideration for others. This is why I am advocating for the legalization of mutual combat in the state of Indiana. I have no intent to mock our laws nor is this petition an attempt at satire. It is my hope that our lawmakers will see the merit in this proposal and act as true representatives for the will of the people.

Mutual combat is a concept where two individuals willingly engage in a physical altercation, with both parties consenting to the terms. This petition is not about promoting violence, but rather about allowing people to settle their disputes directly and personally, reinforcing individual sovereignty and restoring the civility that once existed in a time when words held meaning and consequence.

While this may seem unconventional or even radical to some, it is important to note that several states already recognize mutual combat under specific conditions. Unconventional solutions are often warranted to solve complex problems. I am a proud citizen of the great state of Indiana and I believe that we should lead the way in demonstrating that bodily autonomy and personal responsibility will lead to a more civil and free society for all.

Furthermore, legalizing mutual combat could potentially reduce unregulated street fights which often lead to serious injuries due to lack of supervision or agreed-upon rules. By providing an avenue for regulation and consensual terms we can ensure safety measures are in place to protect the well-being of combatants. I grew up in a time before "zero tolerance" policies for violence in schools existed. There was an understanding people had that they no longer do. For example, we knew better than to stomp a persons head or engage in "many vs one" fights. Permitting mutual combat would allow for a perfectly natural means of conflict resolution without simply ignoring the problem of unregulated violence. I believe it would prevent violence in many instances. Our children should be taught that we are accountable for our words and actions. Moreover, if one does not hold such strong convictions to their opinions that they are not willing to engage in physical altercation to reinforce them then perhaps those opinions should be left unsaid. Not only children, but adults too should understand the potential consequences of uncivil discourse, baseless accusatory rhetoric, and boorish behavior.

I urge all who believe that we need more direct forms of conflict resolution; those who value personal responsibility and individual sovereignty; those who wish for a safer alternative than unregulated, non-consensual street fights, or people being able to say anything they please in the public space without repercussions - please sign this petition. Let's work together to bring Indiana one step closer towards restoring civility lost due to impersonal methods of communication and conflict resolution.
