Legalize Motorcycle Lane Filtering in Congested Traffic in Indiana

Legalize Motorcycle Lane Filtering in Congested Traffic in Indiana
The Issue
I am a local motorcyclist commuting daily from Indiana to Illinois. I have personally experienced the danger of rapid deceleration from highway speeds to a standstill due to surprise traffic buildups and construction patches. I believe that such situations aren't just hazardous to riders like me, but potentially fatal if a driver behind me fails to pay sufficient attention to the road.
Lane filtering, or moving between traffic lanes on a motorcycle, is currently not allowed in Indiana, unlike in some other states or countries. This puts motorcyclists at a significant risk, especially when traffic ahead slows down faster than anticipated.
Studies have shown that legalizing motorcycle lane filtering may increase road safety. A 2015 study by the University of California, Berkeley reported a sharp decrease in accidents involving motorcycles when lane filtering was practiced safely and lawfully.
The proposal here is not advocating reckless behavior; instead, it's a call for the allowance of safe lane filtering. This would apply only in heavy congestion where vehicles are traveling at a speed slower than the state's minimum highway speed, thereby giving motorcyclists a safe way to navigate through congested traffic.
Motorcyclists’ lives are important too. Our safety should be a priority just like any other road user's. By legalizing motorcycle lane filtering, we could make our roads safer for everyone. Please support this petition to urge our legislators in Indiana to reconsider the laws on motorcycles lane filtering.
