Legalize Motorcycle Lane Filtering for Enhanced Road Safety

The Issue

I, like many others, have been deeply impacted by the alarming number of injuries and fatalities that occur annually due to rear-end accidents involving motorcyclists in traffic. Year after year, the statistics are sobering: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most motorcycle accidents happen during peak traffic hours and more than half of all motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. It is not unheard of that these accidents result from a motorcyclist's inability to lane filter.

Lane filtering - the practice of motorcycles moving between lanes of slow or stopped traffic moving in the same direction - must be legalized to increase road safety. It is practiced widely across Europe and in parts of the US, as it increases the visibility of motorcyclists, reduces rear-end collisions, optimizes the use of road space, and improves traffic flow. An Australian study by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) found that lane filtering reduces the incidence of rear-end crashes and improves the overall safety of motorcycles on the roads.

By legalizing lane filtering, we can reduce the number of unnecessary and often traumatic accidents that occur in our country every year. I urge lawmakers to consider the evidence and to legalize lane filtering as a measure to improve road safety. Motorcycle users deserve to share the roads in a way that is safe for us and all other users. Please sign this petition and help us make a difference in motorcyclists' lives.
