The issue

Im a Gelsoft lover. I relish every moment of the, strategic and quick thinking  game which is not only a way to work out but also a way to. though others and me experience the problem of having to take long drive into Qld to be able to enjoy our favourite game: playing with Gel Blasters. This is because Gel Blasters are currently illegal in New South Wales.

Gel Blasters are toys that imitate firearms but use soft gel balls as ammunition. These are a safe recreational tool for people of all ages, widely known for being used in competitive sports similar to paintball. In contrast to other states in Australia, the possession of Gel Blasters in New South Wales is viewed on the same terms as possession of firearms.

This perspective seems to overlook substantial evidence to the contrary. For instance, Gel Blasters don't meet the technical definition of a firearm, as they lack lethal destructive power (Australian Legal Information Institute). Moreover, a study in South Australia concluded that there was no clear linkage between Gel Blasters and violent crime or public threat, suggesting their regulation could be eased (South Australia Police Statement, 2020). Even with the few accidents, there had only been 6 deaths in QLD, which were all because of a failure to follow police instructions. There are many things we could do to make Gel blasters easier to identify or safer keep them.

What we are tabling for consideration is not the mass decriminalisation of lethal weapons, but rather, the legalisation of a leisure activity that builds camaraderie, encourages outdoor play and is no more dangerous than a paintball gun when proper safety measures are in place.

It is time for the legal system in New South Wales to align with the realities surrounding Gel Blasters. Let's enable enthusiasts the right to enjoy this active sport within the limits of our home state. Please sign this petition to legalize Gel Blasters in NSW, so we can play our favourite games without unnecessary restrictions.
