LEGALIZE FIREWORKS IN VIRGINIA!

The Issue

This is an old petition copy/ pasted with my own opinion.

Growing up, I lived in a state where all fireworks except for fountains were Illegal. We fortunately live near two different states that all consumer fireworks were legal. The biggest problem is TAX! The tax we were paying was going to another state. Our governor decided it was time to legalize all fireworks and the first year the state made a killing in taxes alone. Granted, yes there should be laws about fireworks, during certain times need to be set for “quiet” times. During new years no fireworks after 1am. Etc. another link added will show the history of fireworks in Georgia.  http://metroatlantaceo.com/news/2019/07/history-georgias-firework-laws/

fireworks have been a thing for Americans since the beginning of America. Fireworks are a way to celebrate our freedom.

fireworks should be treated as anything else. Safety, safety, safety. Require a course of firework safety. Something to allow us to have consumer fireworks!

recently the state of Virginia tried to legalize fireworks but yet was pushed aside. LET PUR STATE GOVERNMENT KNOW YOU WANT CONSUMER FIREWORKS LEGALIZED!

In Virginia, any fireworks that shoot in the air or explode are illegal. Possessing, selling or using unlawful fireworks is a Class 1 misdemeanor (http://www.dof.virginia.gov/fire/safety/fireworks.htm But, many people violate this law and simply buy fireworks in another state (Pennsylvania, North Carolina and ect.) and smuggle them into Virginia and use them anyways. Allowing these fireworks would attract more firework businesses to the state and giving more business to existing ones, which means more tax money. Since a lot of the state is rural, it would be a lot more productive to have counties and towns set the laws, not the state. It is also a waste of law enforcement's time and supplies that could be used for a better purpose. Also, safe and sane fireworks can be just as dangerous as the ones banned in Virginia as you can see from these examples:

A 6-inch fountain that shot colored fireballs injured a 4-year-old girl. When the fountain tipped over, the victim was struck in the chest by a fireball. She sustained second- and third- degree burns to her chest and neck. She was hospitalized for three weeks for burn treatment and skin grafts.

A 15-year-old male tied together the wires of 10 sparklers. The sparklers ignited quickly and burned down very fast, finally exploding in his hand. The victim sustained a five-inch long laceration to his hand and forearm exposing muscle. Also, debris from the explosion lodged in his hand and arm.

Firework injuries: a ten year study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18603491 proved that "Flare/fountains caused most injury (39% of injuries)"

Because of that study, shouldn't Virginia make fountains and flares illegal? It would reduce the 39% of injuries. Anyways, why does the government have to be responsible for firework injuries? If people took proper precautionary measures, they wouldn't get hurt. The government isn't liable for these injuries.

Once or twice my dad and my cousin have walked over to a legal fountain that they thought went out and it started going again and nearly hit them. Luckily, no one got hurt, but someone else who walks closer to these fountains could get hit.

UPDATE: This 4th of July, in a neighbourhood we heard LOUD booms made by illegal fireworks that had to have been purchased in another state. These fireworks could have gotten Virginia more tax dollars and supported local businesses, but the law (Which didn't seem to be enforced very much) prevented that.

Even if you don't live in Virginia, your signature could help this petition suceed.
