Legalize duelling amongst House of Representatives

Legalize duelling amongst House of Representatives

The Issue

There was a time when honor and accountability were hallmarks of public service. Today, incivility and a lack of repercussions for inappropriate behavior have diminished trust in our political institutions. I believe that this disregard for decency in political discourse has led to a fractured society, where lawmakers no longer hold themselves accountable for their words and actions.

The proposal to legalize duelling among members of the House of Representatives may seem unorthodox, but it stems from a desire to reintroduce responsibility and consequences back into politics. It's disheartening to see representatives engage in heated arguments only to suffer no real consequences for their behavior. If words are their weapons, then let them face real consequences when these words are used recklessly.

For centuries, duelling served as a means of resolving disputes honorably and holding individuals accountable for their actions. I'm proposing a regulated system similar to historical practices—a controlled environment where participants willingly engage under agreed-upon terms to settle their differences with dignity.

In countries where politicians face severe repercussions for unethical behavior, public trust is higher, and government efficiency is notably improved. Reinstating a modern version of duelling could similarly foster a culture of integrity and responsibility among our lawmakers. Letting representatives face each other in a controlled, consensual setting could indeed encourage more thoughtful and respectful debates.

I urge our community and lawmakers to debate the potential of this radical solution and consider the impact it could have on promoting genuine civility in Congress. We must hold our representatives accountable and ensure that our political discourse serves the people with respect and responsibility.

Sign this petition if you believe that our politicians should be accountable for their actions and that there are creative solutions to restoring civility in our governmental proceedings.
