Legalize Domestication of Raccoons as Pets in Oregon

Legalize Domestication of Raccoons as Pets in Oregon
The Issue
This past year, I've found myself increasingly drawn to the idea of raccoons as pets. From what I've seen online, raccoons can be just like puppies - playful, affectionate and intelligent. My research has shown that multiple other states have been allowing raccoons as pets for a long time. It's about time we extend this privilege to the residents of Oregon.
Raccoons are highly adaptable creatures with a high level of intelligence comparable to primates. They are known for their problem-solving skills and dexterity which makes them fascinating companions (National Geographic). Moreover, they can be vaccinated against diseases such as rabies just like dogs or cats (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
However, currently in Oregon it is illegal to keep raccoons as pets under state law ORS 609.335 which classifies them as potentially harmful exotic animals.
We believe that with proper regulations in place regarding their care and vaccination requirements, it would be possible for responsible pet owners in Oregon to provide loving homes for these unique creatures without posing any significant public health risks.
Therefore, we call upon the State Legislature of Oregon to reconsider its stance on this issue and amend ORS 609.335 accordingly so that our fellow citizens who wish to adopt raccoons as pets may do so legally.
Please sign this petition if you agree with us that it's about time we allow the domestication of raccoons in our beautiful state!
