This petition is deeply personal. I have an aunt who was trapped in an abusive marriage, a situation so dire that her children were also victims of this abuse. She felt helpless because divorce is not yet legal in the Philippines, and the process of petitioning for annulment is both costly and time-consuming.

The Philippines remains one of only two countries worldwide where divorce is still illegal, leaving countless women and children trapped in harmful situations with no legal recourse. We believe everyone deserves the right to live in safety and dignity, free from fear and harm.

By advocating for divorce rights, we aim to provide a lifeline to those who need it most - helping them find freedom and protection. The United Nations has recognized that denying women equal access to divorce can lead to situations where they are "trapped in violent marriages", violating their human rights (UN Women).

We call upon lawmakers in the Philippines to recognize this urgent issue affecting many families across our nation. It's time for change; it's time for freedom from abuse; it's time for legalized divorce.
