I am writing this petition on behalf of a dear friend who is trapped in an unhappy marriage, yearning for the freedom to legally separate from her partner. The Philippines remains as the only country in the world where divorce is illegal, except for Vatican City. This outdated law leaves millions of Filipinos stuck in toxic or abusive relationships with no legal recourse.

According to a survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) in 2018, 53% of Filipinos support legalizing divorce. This shows that there is significant public support for this change and it's time our laws reflected that.

The absence of a divorce law impacts women disproportionately. Women are often financially dependent on their husbands and without a way out of an abusive or unhappy marriage, they are left vulnerable and trapped.

By legalizing divorce we can provide all citizens with the right to choose happiness and safety over societal norms. We can give them an opportunity to start anew without stigma or fear.
