Legalize Death with Dignity in New Hampshire

Legalize Death with Dignity in New Hampshire
The Issue
In late 2018, a beloved father and grandfather was diagnosed with stage 1B pancreatic cancer. Over the past five years, he has endured multiple rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries in an attempt to halt the spread of this devastating disease. Six months ago, he received a terminal diagnosis. This man, once full of energy and joy - an avid hunter, motorcycle enthusiast, and doting grandparent - is now trapped in constant pain. His current existence is far from the vibrant life he once led.
This personal story is not unique to our family but shared by many others across New Hampshire who are grappling with terminal illnesses. They deserve the right to choose how they want their lives to end - a choice that currently isn't available due to existing laws. New Hampshire's motto is Live Free or Die - however one is not free when they are trapped inside of their own bodies due to pain and suffering.
It's time to tell Governor Sununu that enough is enough - let people live freely and die freely.
Death with dignity laws allow terminally ill adults to request prescription medication from their physicians to hasten their death—a choice made out of compassion for those suffering unbearable pain or distress at the end of life. As per Death With Dignity National Center's data analysis (2020), since Oregon passed its law in 1997 allowing such choice for patients, over 2000 people have utilized it without any reported abuse cases.
New Hampshire residents should have this same option available as part of comprehensive end-of-life care planning. It's about providing individuals autonomy over their bodies and lives even until the very end.
We urge lawmakers in New Hampshire state legislature to consider legalizing death with dignity for terminally ill patients who wish for it—thus ensuring that no one has to endure unnecessary suffering at what should be a peaceful time surrounded by loved ones.
Please sign this petition if you believe in granting people control over their final days when faced with terminal illness.
