Legalize Car Underglow Lighting in Connecticut (with Safety Rules)

The Issue

Right now in Connecticut, all aftermarket underglow lighting on cars is completely banned. This means car enthusiasts, hobbyists, and everyday drivers who want to add safe, decorative lighting to their vehicles have no legal way to do so — even though many other states allow it under reasonable restrictions.

We are asking Connecticut lawmakers to update the motor vehicle code to legalize underglow lighting with commonsense safety rules, such as:

Lights must be steady-burning (no flashing or strobing)
No red or blue lights, which are reserved for emergency vehicles
The actual light source (bulbs/LED strips) must be hidden, with only the glow visible
Lights cannot interfere with headlights, brake lights, or turn signals
Legalizing underglow with these rules would:

Support Connecticut’s car culture and enthusiast community
Benefit small businesses and shops that sell and install these systems
Bring our state in line with others (like California, Texas, and Arizona) that already allow underglow safely
Car enthusiasts deserve the freedom to customize their vehicles responsibly. By making this change, Connecticut can show it values both safety and personal expression.

Please add your name to this petition to show lawmakers there is real support for this change. Together, we can encourage our representatives and the DMV to modernize Connecticut’s laws and bring safe underglow lighting to our roads.
