The Issue

As a hobbyist and a family oriented individual, I find great joy and educational value in raising backyard chickens. Chickens aren't just about eggs; they represent a lifestyle, a connection to nature, and an opportunity for learning. Not only do chickens provide fresh, organic eggs, but they also serve as wonderful companions and offer educational experiences for children and adults alike.

In many urban and suburban areas across the country, there is a growing movement to legalize backyard chickens. Families and individuals are recognizing the benefits of keeping these small flocks at home. They help reduce food waste by consuming kitchen scraps, provide natural pest control, and their manure can be composted to provide nutrient-rich soil for gardening.

Unfortunately, many municipalities still have outdated ordinances that restrict the keeping of chickens in residential areas. These laws are often based on misconceptions about noise, smell, and disease, all of which have been disproven by research and the experiences of communities where backyard chickens are legal.

Cities like Wauconda and Long Grove, Illinois which have successfully allowed backyard chickens, report increased community engagement and environmental sustainability. We can learn from these examples and adapt the successful frameworks they have implemented.

By legalizing backyard chickens, we can empower families to become more self-sustainable, encourage environmental stewardship, and offer unique educational opportunities. It promotes healthier lifestyles and closer community ties, benefiting us all.

Join us in urging our local government to reassess current ordinances and adopt new policies that support the keeping of backyard chickens. Sign this petition to help make our community a leader in sustainable living and family education.
