Legalize Backyard Chickens in Aurora, IL – Healthy, Sustainable, and Community-Friendly

The Issue

Aurora is the second-largest city in Illinois, yet unlike nearby communities, we still do not allow residents to responsibly keep backyard hens.

Cities like Batavia, Plainfield,  Naperville, Oswego, Elgin, Elburn and Sugar Grove have successfully allowed hens for years without major issues. These examples prove that it can be done safely and responsibly.

We are proposing a reasonable, limited ordinance:

A small number of hens (no roosters)

Coop and fencing requirements

Responsible ownership standards to address concerns like odor, noise, and predators

The benefits are clear:

Access to fresh, healthier, antibiotic-free eggs

Sustainable living and reduced food waste

Natural pest control (hens eat ticks, and insects)

Educational opportunities for kids and families

Stronger community connections across neighborhoods and wards

We ask Aurora’s City Council and Mayor to move forward with a fair ordinance that gives Aurora residents the same opportunity our neighboring cities already enjoy.

Please sign this petition to show your support. Please add your wards number and write yes or no if you emailed your alderperson.

Together, we can bring positive, common-sense change to Aurora.

Thank you for reaching out regarding the proposal to legalize backyard chickens in Aurora. As Chairman of the Rules and Procedures Committee, I chaired the meeting where this issue was most recently considered. The matter came before the committee at our meeting last Tuesday, September 2nd at 3:00 p.m, minutes and recording available here: https://aurora-il.granicus.com/player/clip/2052 Input was received from close to 1,000 residents on both sides of the issue. After weighing that feedback, and considering enforcement responsibilities for city departments such as Property Standards and Animal Control, the committee decided not to move the proposal forward at this time. The recommendation was made that the proposal could be revisited in about a year, should community members wish to raise it again. At this point, however, there are no active plans to advance an ordinance. I appreciate the high level of community involvement on this issue. Please know that all perspectives were taken seriously during the committee’s deliberations. Respectfully, Alderman Bugg Chairman, Rules and Procedures Committee City of Aurora
