Legalize and Provide Free Access to Abortion for Women Globally

The Issue

This petition is deeply personal. A close friend of mine was taken advantage of, resulting in an unwanted pregnancy. She was not ready nor did she desire to have a child. Fortunately, we live in a place where abortion is legal and she could make that choice for herself. But this isn't the case everywhere, and I want to change that.

Every woman deserves the right to decide what happens with her body without any financial or legal barriers. It's about time we extend this basic human right globally.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year around 25 million unsafe abortions are performed worldwide, contributing significantly to maternal mortality rates especially in countries where abortion is illegal or restricted (WHO 2017). This statistic underscores the urgent need for safe and accessible abortion services everywhere.

     1. Six out of 10 of all unintended pregnancies end in an induced abortion.
     2. Around 45% of all abortions are unsafe, of which 97% take place in developing countries. Unsafe abortion is a leading – but preventable – cause of maternal deaths and morbidities. It can lead to physical and mental health complications and social and financial burdens for women, communities and health systems.
     3. Lack of access to safe, timely, affordable and respectful abortion care is a critical public health and human rights issue.
     4. Unintended pregnancies remain an important public health issue. Globally, 74 million women living in low and middle-income countries have unintended pregnancies annually. This leads to 25 million unsafe abortions and 47 000 maternal deaths every year.

I am advocating for all governments across the globe to legalize abortion and provide it free of charge as part of their healthcare services. By doing so, we can ensure women's safety, protect their rights, reduce maternal mortality rates significantly and give every woman peace of mind knowing she has control over her own body.
