Legalize 250W E-Bikes with Throttle for Disabled Riders

The Issue

Living with a disability can present enormous challenges, especially when mobility is restricted. I, along with many others, find navigating hills and starting at red lights in a traditional bike a strenuous and exhausting task. But, when I ride a 250-watt e-bike equipped with a throttle(private land as it’s not legal) my experience completely transforms. It's a tool that promotes independence, freedom, and a better quality of life.

In the UK, possessing an e-bike with a 250W engine and a throttle is often met with legal restrictions, mainly due to the association of higher-wattage e-bikes with speed-related risks. However, the speed limitation of 16 mph set for these e-bikes is safe and responsible. It's a manageable speed that poses no threat to the rider or to pedestrians. This could offer a significant benefit to people living with disabilities who struggle with the energy demands of cycling under normal conditions.

Unfortunately, current laws focus on the generalized regulation of e-bikes rather than considering the individual needs and circumstances of all users, such as people with mobility challenges. They may have their bikes seized, adding uncertainty and stress to their lives, which seems utterly disproportionate for bikes that provide such a vital service.

Our purpose here is to refocus legislative efforts away from these low-wattage bikes to more pressing issues like stolen goods and the threats posed by those carrying knives or drugs – issues which truly impact community safety more than responsibly used e-bikes ever could.

Seizing bikes over 500 watts is understandable due to the real speed risks involved. But e-bikes at or below 250 watts, specifically fitted with a throttle for those who require assistance starting from stationary positions, should be legal. They provide a necessary reprieve and mobility solution for those living with disabilities, offering them a safe, dependable, and environmentally friendly way to travel.

Join me in petitioning for a change in the e-bike regulations within the UK. Let’s ensure people with disabilities are empowered, not penalized. Please sign this petition and help make practical mobility solutions accessible for all.
