Legalise the Ownership of Raccoons and Hedgehogs in Australia

The issue

I am an avid animal lover, with a special fondness for unique and peculiar pets. It truly breaks my heart that in Australia, where I reside, ownership of certain exotic animals such as raccoons and hedgehogs, is currently prohibited. I believe in the joy these adorable creatures bring, and I am convinced they can be responsibly cared for, in the right environments.

Research shows that with the right care and nurturing, raccoons and hedgehogs make wonderful pets. Raccoons are intelligent, playful, and exhibit the ability to remember problem-solving tasks for up to three years (source: National Geographic), making them fascinating companions. Hedgehogs, on the other hand, are known for being low-maintenance with a gentle disposition, and their unique ability to roll into a protective ball when threatened is a marvel in itself (source: International Hedgehog Association).

Not only do these animals make intriguing and unique pets, but accommodating them could also contribute to the animal diversity in Australia. It is time for the legislation to evolve in alignment with the current reality, which increasingly recognises the importance of our relationship with these distinctive species.

I am lodging this plea, on behalf of all Australians who share a similar passion for these creatures. We urge regulatory authorities to reconsider the restrictions, and legalise the ownership of raccoons and hedgehogs in Australia. Open our homes and hearts to these amazing animals!
