The Issue

Our women aren’t safe.

Growing up in London and working within the security industry has given me personal insight into the pervasive issue of knife crime. Despite the illegality of carrying knives, many individuals disregard the law and carry them for harmful purposes. This has created an environment where law-abiding citizens constantly feel vulnerable, especially women who are at greater risk of assault. This petition calls for the legalisation of pepper spray and the authorisation of tasers, coupled with proper training and permits, to allow individuals the means to defend themselves effectively.

Statistics from the UK government indicate a rise in recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were over 46,000 knife crime offences in England and Wales in 2020 alone. Many of these crimes have left victims unable to defend themselves, with women often being among the most affected.

Providing a legal framework for carrying defensive tools like pepper spray and tasers can act as a significant deterrent to potential attackers. In countries like the United States, where such defensive measures are legal, there has been a noted reduction in certain types of violent crime. This shows that equipping individuals with non-lethal means of protection doesn't just empower the vulnerable but can also contribute to overall public safety.

The legalisation of pepper spray should come with strict regulations, ensuring that only individuals who have undergone appropriate training and received necessary certification are permitted to carry it. Similarly, tasers should be authorised for use only under specific conditions, for individuals who have proven competence and responsibility through mandatory training programs.

Current self-defence options are limited and do not provide the necessary immediacy and effectiveness required in dangerous situations. While other measures such as martial arts training or personal alarms serve a purpose, they are often inadequate when facing an immediate threat. Pepper spray and tasers offer immediate response options that are both non-lethal and effective, allowing potential victims the crucial opportunity to escape and seek help.

In advocating for this change, we are not asking for a relaxation of law enforcement but for an empowering legal tool that protects our basic rights to safety. It’s about giving equal opportunities for self-defence to those who follow the law.

Let's band together to protect our community from unnecessary harm. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to legalise pepper spray and authorise tasers for self-defence, providing a safer environment for all citizens in the UK.
