Jemma Utley started this petition to leeds city council and

An appeal from Tom Foolery in Boston Spa to Leeds City Council.

As you well know, while kids are still heading to schools and universities remain open, the hospitality and events industry has been crippled while doing their best to follow government guidelines, adapting to become takeaways, off licences, or closing completely and costing hundreds of jobs. Businesses have been encouraged to adapt and survive, while also receiving conflicting information, for example, a 10pm curfew following the Eat Out to Help Out initiative.

Like many other bar owners, I have invested a considerable percentage of our profits and time in staff training to do what I can to make my locations Covid secure. Probably one of our biggest investments was the adaptation of the beer garden at Tom Foolery. Putting up dividers on heated booths, as well as putting up the cover so people can socialise outside comfortably.

The local council has been asked by the central government to make allowances for more outside areas to be used for outside drinking and dining. Gifting large amounts of road and pavement space to operators to help out an industry on its knees.

So you can imagine my surprise when I have received two letters from the Leeds City Council asking for the terrace to be taken out or they would be serving a notice to have it removed. With everything going on, their primary concern is a covered seating area which is providing the local community a haven where they can meet friends and family?

We adapted the beer garden to avoid impacting the local area. We aren’t wanting swathes of pavement space or streets to sprawl out outdoor seating on. We just want to put up some plastic sheeting so we can keep going through winter with an adaptable space.

So if you want our beer garden to remain as is, please share and tag the following councillors and tell them your thoughts: Norma Harrington, Alan Lamb, and Linda Richards.

If we win this petition it will support our application for an appeal which will strengthen our case against the council making us take it down. Please sign and share to preserve your favourite spot for the summer.
