The Real Vote
Jun 9, 2015
Friends and allies, As expected, the Senate passed Bill C-51 on Tuesday. This day marks one of the most disturbing moments in our nation's political history. It puts to rest any fantasies we might have once entertained about the Senate's role as a house of "sober second thought," and highlights the need to fast-track the campaign to abolish the unelected Senate. But that isn't all that happened on Tuesday. LeadNow has just sent an email to its volunteers saying, "Recently, we’ve heard from many people in the Leadnow community who are disappointed about the decision of Liberals MPs to vote for Bill C-51." "We’ve also heard from many people, including allies and grassroots groups, who want them to commit to repeal the bill, not just amend it." "As one of Leadnow’s most active members, we want to know what you’re thinking." Two things should be clear: (1) They are referring to you, dear reader. You should be flattered… except that this is not a survey of you, or progressives in general, or the LeadNow community as a whole, but of "active volunteers" on the Vote Together campaign. In other words, people who have already committed to helping to elect Liberals. (2) We think that this is a form of a "push poll" that will lend ostensible legitimacy to any decision by LeadNow's organizers to continue endorsing the Liberals. In other words, we think that this is a ruse designed to maneouvre around the C-51 issue and get a pre-determined answer that keeps the Liberals as an option in the Vote Together campaign. If LeadNow is a democratic community, then it shouldn't be having votes on fundamental democratic rights and freedoms. It should be protecting those rights to begin with, regardless of survey results. A red team is an independent group that challenges an organization to improve its effectiveness. This is a proposal for a covert, Red Team action against LeadNow to improve their effectiveness in upholding one of their core community priorities: a "strong democracy." To participate in this red team operation, you just need to take the survey, and use your own words to tell LeadNow why their current strategy of including Liberals doesn't make sense—and why excluding them does. Are you ready? This is the link to the survey that was sent to LeadNow volunteers: http://www.votetogether.ca/feedback You can start with these points, sent to us from a supporter of this campaign—but it's important to develop them in YOUR OWN DIRECTION, using your own words (or else it won't be a red team operation, it will just be another petition): Good luck, and let us know what you told LeadNow. Email chris@therealvote.ca with your own statement. In solidarity, Chris Wiseman The Real Vote p.s.
