Leaders of the EU Member States: Call to release and rehabilitation of Mikola Statkevich #OneMore2beFree

There are 6 political prisoners in Belarus now. Among them is Mikalai Statkevich, a presidential candidate for Belarus in the 2010 election. Belarusian authorities are trying to put pressure on the political prisoners by providing them harsh prison conditions. Drawing attention of the international community to this problem could improve the situation of the imprisoned oppositionists in Belarus and support their relatives.

Situation of Mikola Statkevich is very difficult. He was convicted for 6 years of participation in a demonstration on 19 December 2010. He is a subject of constant pressure in a prison. He was sent to a punishment cell several times. They tried to break his spirit by limiting contacts with his lawyer, family, as well as limiting correspondence. He was accused of „inability of resocialization in a prison” and was additionally convicted to three years of a stricter colony regime. A proposal to make an appeal for pardon addressed to president Alexander Lukashenko was made to Statkevich several times. But he had refused it flatly, with the result the pressure upon him was stepped up.

Actions of colony's authorities show that Lukashenko aim to destroy his political opponents. We cannot allow it!

Therefore we appeal to the leaders of EU member states to take permanent actions in order to release and rehabilitate Mikola Statkevich, as well as other Belarusian political prisoners, put pressure upon Belarusian regime and immediately address to Belarusian government demanding to stop tortures and other forms of inhuman treatment of political prisoners and stop the prosecution on Mikola Statkevich.

We deeply believe that only consistent actions and a common position of EU member states can lead to the release of Belarusian political prisoners.
