Lead the way in protecting student-athletes from sudden cardiac arrest

The Issue

A $15 dollar test might have prevented my son from dying. We are fighting to make sure other families never have to ask themselves “What if?”

Our son Cody wasn’t the kind of person who took life for granted. He lived every day to the fullest and had the biggest heart. In a cruel twist of fate, it would be his heart that would take him from this world. An all-star athlete headed to college on a football scholarship, Cody took a nap one afternoon and never woke up.

We had no idea our son, who seemed so healthy, had a ticking time bomb in his chest. Cody died from sudden cardiac arrest -- a silent killer of many young athletes. Most parents have never heard of sudden cardiac arrest until it is too late. The worst part is finding out a $15 dollar, noninvasive electrocardiogram test might have detected the problem and saved his life. We were determined not to let our son be another statistic. His life meant something and so would his death.

Texas HB 767 would require high school students get an EKG prior to playing sports. Join us in asking the Texas legislature and governor to pass and sign HB 767 into law.

EKG screenings have been proven to be an effective, cheap tool in fighting sudden cardiac arrest. They reliably identify serious conditions that could lead to sudden cardiac arrest and allow for preventative measures to be taken. Even the International Olympic Committee & European Society of Cardiology recommends EKG screenings of young athletes every 2 years while active.

HB 767 is a bipartisan bill written across party lines and with the help of medical experts. It is a much-needed solution to prevent sudden cardiac arrest among our student athletes.

Our son’s life was worth so much to us and those who knew him. He was an invaluable soul and it is devastating to know a $15 dollar test might have made a difference. It’s time we make sure no parent has to live through losing their child needlessly. Together we can make sure Texas leads the way in protecting our student-athletes from sudden cardiac arrest, hopefully inspiring states across the country to pass similar laws.
