To Observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day As A No School Holiday

The Issue

Dear School Board and Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District—

We are staff, students, families, supporters, and affiliates of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Whereas, the Indigenous Peoples have inhabited and have taken care of the Western Hemisphere for tens of thousands of years; and,

Whereas, the Indigenous Peoples were dispossessed of their homelands by European immigrants; and,

Whereas, the Indigenous Peoples have suffered the greatest genocide in recorded history at the hands of European Invaders; and,

Whereas, Christopher Columbus day was once a recognized No School Holiday for the Los Angeles Unified School District for decades; and,

Whereas, Indigenous Peoples' Day is now a recognized Holiday by Los Angeles City and County;

Wherefore, be it resolved that the Los Angeles Unified School District adopt Indigenous Peoples' Day as a recognized No School Holiday on the second Monday of October. In addition to, for educational purposes, the District should promote October as Indigenous Peoples’ Awareness Month and provide funds for month-long activities at all schools.
