Demand a Computer and Wifi for LAUSD Low-Income students falling behind!

The Issue

Nearly 50,000 LAUSD students are without the necessary equipment to attend online, distance-learning classes imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. A disproportionate number of African Americans and Latinx are already facing unequal access to public education, and the worldwide epidemic has only driven racial divides further creating a technological achievement gap that will have a profound negative impact on these students. These LAUSD students face serious technological challenges in hearing lessons, receiving assignments, and participating in online learning.  Some computers cannot handle all the programs necessary to run classes and submit schoolwork.  Many low-income, Black, and Brown students have to share a single computer or hotspot with their siblings or other people in their household working side by side without headphones or supplies. Students have reported putting laptops aside, as they don't work, and they cannot get technical assistance. Not every family can afford to buy a new computer, and students can't do their school work without these necessities.

LAUSD Board Members and Superintendent Austin Beutner have not done enough to support students nor have Los Angeles City Council or Mayor Eric Garcetti stepped in to remedy these serious problems--even while classes remain active, and kids are falling behind.

Ready To Help Mutual Aid Community Network is demanding that LAUSD superintendent, LAUSD Board members, the LA City Council Members, and Mayor Garcetti provide every student in Los Angeles with equal access to a computer, fast internet, and adequate IT support necessary for their distance learning classrooms.
