Better LAUSD cafeteria food

Better LAUSD cafeteria food

The Issue

LAUSD Cafeteria food is known to be not so good. As a fellow student I’ve observed that depending on what is served that day some people won’t even touch the food. Lunch is known to be unappetizing but if you have no other options you just have to make do, same goes for breakfast. LAUSD has stepped up on somethings but we shouldn’t just focus on “healthy options'' because what is being served at school isn't even healthy . If you can't see every ingredient on the nutritional facts, just be aware that there are chemicals involved. For example the juice boxes served for breakfast contain a buck load of sugar and are high in calories for just the small amount of liquid. Is that even healthy? Honestly why say you want to provide students with healthier options to help them focus more when the options aren’t even healthy and it doesn’t even taste good to begin with?

Many students don’t eat lunch because there aren't any appealing food choices. Many starve throughout the day. One look at the food served, many turn away and say “Oh it's that today.” With this reaction 100,000 worth of food is tossed out daily. 600 tons of daily waste.50 million dollars a year are drained on the LA food services. Which is a big contributor to the district budget deficiencies. According to LA WEEKLY, many of the students rely on the food at school because it is their only source of food, but the food often provided is distasteful. “Seventy-five percent of the students in LAUSD come from homes with incomes below the federal poverty level. To many of them, any food — even school food — is better than nothing. Yet parents have long been irate over the quality of food at school breakfasts and lunch.” If we students are expected to work hard when learning in class and taking tests, we should at least be offered some decent meal options that are both appetizing and healthy. We need foods that will keep us well nourished throughout the school day.
