The Issue

Given the hardships that COVID-19 has put upon everyone, Southwestern University’s efforts to keep students and staff safe and well while on campus during this time were undoubtedly effective. However, it is important to acknowledge that students and staff were stressed and overwhelmed due to the continuous work load. While the cancellation of fall break did help decrease COVID-19 exposure, the long-term effects this had on students were detrimental to mental, physical, and academic well-being. With the spring semester approaching, we as a university need to learn from our past experiences and adjust with these ever-changing conditions. The decision to cancel spring break will lead students and stuff to suffer through the same perils of this semester. We as a community must learn from our past experiences in order to improve the overall well-being of Southwestern students and staff. Other universities are doing exactly this, compensating students by re-distributing pre-existing spring break days throughout the semester. We believe that this is a very viable solution since it restricts the travel of students while still giving them the desired break. It is necessary that Southwestern takes initiative in making these adjustments if they are to expect any improvement in overall well-being of both students and faculty.
