get rid of the “manhattan indians “ mascot

get rid of the “manhattan indians “ mascot

The Issue

Petition to get rid of the “manhattan indians” mascot. Yes it has been around since 1857, but it is truly offensive to the the native americans who originally owned kansas and got taken away with violence in 1830 from europeans. (kshs.org)

Christopher Columbus landed in America and discovered he did not land in India.

It’s understood that the mascot was created for “honor” and not in a derogatory way. However it is still derogatory term to use period. It may be a term to identify the community. But you don’t realize how it is wrong.

Now the demographics of Manhattan. (census.gov)

White people : 82.5 %
Native Americans : 0.3 %

Now, as you see the population of native americans is very low, which wouldn’t make sense to call our school the “Manhattan Indians”

Why the term “indian” is offensive;

when the “indian act happened in 1876 , it allowed government to control all aspects of First Nations.

the term “indian” was used by government to identity native americans. which is now outdated and shouldn’t be used. (https://indigenousfoundations.arts.ubc.ca/terminology/#indian

and it’s flat out —

racist.
