Launch a Remake of Twilight with Gender-Swapped Roles
The Issue
Our passion for quality entertainment and promoting strong and confident women in major roles has driven us to start this petition. We believe a remake of Twilight but with gender-swapped roles would be a game-changer and add a fresh perspective to the saga. Florence Pugh as the Werewolf (Jacob's character), Ana De Armas as Edward's character, and a male actor as Bella's character could revolutionize this famous series.
I and many others never quite understood the original Twilight's hype. The storyline, dominated by expedient malecharacters, offered little inspiration for the viewer. We deserve storytelling that affirms the strength of women, not just in their vulnerabilities but also in their physical prowess.
If our call is heeded, we will showcase a different narrative where women are not portrayed as fragile creatures, but with significant physical strength and allure. This interpretation will inspire millions of viewers globally, particularly young women, showing them it's possible to be both strong and appealing.
According to a study conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, women comprised only 25% of the protagonists in top-grossing films of 2019, and only 37% of major characters overall. In fantasy films, the number of female lead characters was even lower (Geena Davis Institute, 2020). Gender representation in top-grossing films has been a subject of extensive research, revealing persistent disparities both on-screen and behind the scenes. Here are some notable statistics:

Lead Roles: In 2023, only 30% of the top 100 grossing films featured women in lead or co-lead roles, a decrease from 44% in 2022 and matching the percentage from 2010. Speaking Characters: Women accounted for 35% of speaking characters in the top 100 films of 2023, a slight decline from 37% in 2022.
Age Representation: Female characters aged 45 and above were significantly underrepresented, with only 7% of films featuring a woman in this age group as a lead or co-lead, compared to 27% featuring men of the same age.
Behind-the-Scenes Representation:
Directors: Women directed 16% of the top 250 grossing films in 2023, an increase from 9% in 1998.
Writers: Women comprised 17% of writers for the top 250 films in 2023, up from 13% in 1998.
Producers: Women made up 26% of producers in 2023, a slight rise from 24% in 1998.
Cinematographers: The percentage of female cinematographers increased from 4% in 1998 to 7% in 2023.
Pay Disparity: In 2024, only two women—Margot Robbie and Jennifer Aniston—were among the top ten highest-paid actors, highlighting a persistent gender pay gap in Hollywood.
These statistics underscore the ongoing challenges in achieving gender parity in the film industry, both in front of and behind the camera.
