The Issue

As an African American passionate about baseball, one of my lifelong dreams has been to attend a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in my home state of Oklahoma and play the sport I love. Langston University, the lone HBCU in the state, however, lacks a baseball program, which means the opportunity to combine my passion for baseball with my cultural and academic aspirations is currently out of reach.

Langston University holds a significant place in our community, offering numerous opportunities for African American students. Introducing a baseball program would not only enhance the sports offerings at the university but also attract talented students from across the state and beyond, eager to play baseball while embracing the unique environment and education an HBCU provides.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reports that participation in college baseball can increase student engagement, enhance personal development, and even provide career pathways in sports and athletics. By establishing a baseball program, Langston University can build stronger alumni networks, increase school spirit, and provide more comprehensive student experiences.

Moreover, a baseball program can increase diversity within college sports offerings in Oklahoma. With more than 73% of Major League Baseball (MLB) players being of diverse backgrounds, having a baseball program at Langston University aligns with national trends and reinforces the university’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students.

Launching a baseball program requires investments in infrastructure, including the development of a baseball field and the hiring of coaching staff. However, these efforts can be supported through community partnerships, alumni donations, and potential sponsorship deals. By involving community stakeholders and seeking support from local businesses and sports organizations, Langston University’s baseball program can be a resounding success.

I urge Langston University and its stakeholders to seriously consider this opportunity. By doing so, they will not only fulfill the dreams of countless aspiring athletes like myself but also strengthen the university's legacy and impact. Please join me in advocating for the establishment of a baseball program at Langston University by signing this petition.
