Save MTA Maryland! Stop 20% Reduction in Baltimore Public Transit System.

Save MTA Maryland! Stop 20% Reduction in Baltimore Public Transit System.

The Issue

On September 1, 2020 Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) announced a nearly 20% reduction in bus service due in part to the budgetary constraints of the COVID-19 Pandemic. MDOT MTA serves as the primary means of transportation for the nearly 1 in 3 Baltimore citizens without a car. The proposed elimination of 25 bus lines, decreased MARC Service, and decreased Express Bus Service will negatively impact thousands of people who depend on these services in order to work, attend school, attend doctors appointments, and conduct everyday errands such as grocery shopping. These problems are compounded by the Federal Government's unwillingness to pass needed funding for systems like MDOT MTA during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I am one among those thousands who depend on MDOT MTA for travel across the Baltimore area. I know first hand that these cuts will drastically harm the ability of essential workers to help the most vulnerable during the on going pandemic and will harm those members of my community who depend on MDOT MTA as their only means of Transportation. The proposed cuts will eliminate service for up to 3% of those who depend on Baltimore public transit (The Baltimore Sun, 2020).

I call upon Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, MTA Administrator Kevin B. Quinn Jr., and the Federal Senators, Federal Representatives, State Senators, and State Representatives for Baltimore City and County to help save MTA Baltimore and ensure economic equality. Reduce/remove the cuts made to the MDOT MTA budget, Change or Remove much of the proposed cuts to service, and Pass much needed legislative funding for the already underfunded MDOT MTA.
