Landmark Washington Irving Campus Lobby & Give Us Back Our Statue

The Issue

Last school year the historic Washington Irving statue that was in front of our school disappeared. No one, including members of The School Construction Authority will provide any information about the statues location or a timeline for its return. Our campus is a historical landmark and deserves proper recognition. Washington Irving High School opened in 1913 after student led protests as the first all girls technical high school in the country. It’s facilities and instructional practices were unique and world renowned. Our school was prominently featured in National Geographic, Time Magazine and written about in Eleanor Roosevelt’s memoirs after her visit and speech in our auditorium. The history of our schools continues to inspire students and teachers across NYC as we continue furthering Career & Technical Education, service learning and The Arts. The murals on the walls of the lobby were painted by famous American artist Barry Faulkner before and after WWI and depict the history of our city. We need our campus’ statue back at its rightful home and official historical landmark status to preserve our school’s amazing history for all, and for posterity. We would love your help to do so.
