Make PMDs and EUCs the personal transportation of the future

Make PMDs and EUCs the personal transportation of the future
The Issue
To the Government and the Public,
We are a group of adult Electric Unicycle (EUC) users who rely on these Personal Electric Vehicles (PEVs) for our daily commutes and personal transportation needs. While the latest regulations by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have not banned PMD use entirely, they have specifically prohibited their use on pedestrian footpaths. Instead, bicycles are allowed on these footpaths, which, if ridden recklessly, can also pose a danger to pedestrians.
We believe that EUCs, due to their small form factor and maneuverability, should be considered for use on pedestrian footpaths, similar to bicycles. Unlike e-scooters and e-bikes, EUCs do not currently require registration or certification, making them a practical and accessible option for many users.
Banning EUCs from footpaths is neither a fair nor effective solution to address safety concerns. Such a ban would deprive us of our right to choose a convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly mode of travel. It would also negatively impact the livelihoods of many EUC users who depend on these devices for work or business.
EUCs offer several advantages over other modes of personal transportation. Their compact size allows them to sit within the body, making them less obtrusive and more maneuverable than bicycles. EUCs produce zero emissions and consume less energy compared to other PEVs. Additionally, they take up less space and help reduce traffic congestion. EUCs can also improve our health and well-being by encouraging physical activity and outdoor recreation.
We urge the government and the public to consider the benefits and challenges of EUC use in a balanced and rational manner. Instead of banning EUCs from footpaths, we propose increased efforts to educate and enforce safe and considerate EUC use among all users and pedestrians. Additionally, we suggest the provision of more infrastructure and facilities to support EUC use, such as dedicated lanes, parking spaces, and charging stations.
We are committed to cooperating with the government and the public to make EUC use safer and more harmonious for everyone. We pledge to be respectful and courteous to other road users and pedestrians, to adhere to speed limits and other regulations, and to wear proper protective gear when riding our EUCs.
We hope that our voices will be heard and respected as stakeholders in the future of personal transportation in Singapore. We advocate for EUC use to be regulated and supported in a reasonable and sustainable manner, rather than banned from footpaths.
Thank you for your attention and understanding.
