Ban Neonic Pesticides in British Columbia

The federal government of Canada has proposed limits and restrictions to be put on the usage of neonicotinoid or 'neonic' pesticides, but has not made the move to phase them out. Neonic pesticides are popular in the agriculture industry and are a common insecticide. Scientific studies have shown that neonic pesticides are detrimental to the environment and can lead to a plethora of health issues in both humans and animals. These chemicals are disrupting entire ecosystems- killing insects, birds, fish, frogs, and earthworms as well as the habitats they dwell in; neonicotinoid pesticides are responsible for killing the already endangered honeybees and bumblebees (the very insects we rely on to pollinate 1/3 of the food we consume).

Neonic pesticides were first introduced in the 1990's and are relatively new, this means that there are very few studies conducted that follow the long-term effects that this insecticide has on human health. Considering the effect neonicotinoids have on the environment, and the fact that similar chemicals have been linked to Parkinson's disease, asthma and various types of cancer this is not reassuring. Studies have been done to conclude that traces of these chemicals have been found in fruits and vegetables and it has been shown that neoonic pesticides cannot be washed off of the surface of food.

Currently there are three neonicotinoid approved for agriculture use in Canada: imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam; although the federal government has issued assessments and restrictions on these chemicals, many environmentalists feel that only the eradication of neonic pesticides will be an effective way to stop the environmental damage. Europe is moving towards banning these harmful pesticides, but sadly Canada lags behind.

Sign this petition to provoke change in British Columbia's government to put a ban on the usage of neonicotinoids for the protection of the environment, the animals, and ourselves.
