The Issue

360 Rosendale school pupils (half the school) use the Turney road side at drop off & pick up. 360 pupils is equivalent to an average primary school size in Lambeth.

Turney road is an extremely busy residential road with very high traffic volumes, a significant number of which are vans & Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). The extent of the excessive traffic levels on Turney road has been well documented & recognised by Southwark council in their forthcoming plans to make the Southwark side of Turney road one way at peak times.

Yet on the Lambeth side by Rosendale school, there are no road safety measures in place to support the 360 children & their families who regularly need to cross Turney road twice a day. As a result there have been car accidents & near accidents involving children at the school.   The specific issues are:

-          The sight lines on Turney road for pedestrians crossing are terrible due to the turns in the road & the volume of parked cars on each side of the road.

-          The 2 traffic islands are not usable because access to one is permanently blocked by the barriers outside the school gate & access to the other is frequently blocked by parked cars at peak times.

We urgently urge the council to implement 2 zebra crossings on Turney road outside Rosendale school for the safety of the children & local community.
