Save Lamaloloa, Kohala Coast, from Development
Please sign this petition to preserve Lamaloloa which is under threat of sale for development. Lamaloloa is in the heart of a long stretch of coastal lands in North Kohala on Hawaii Island that have been preserved by the community. THIS AREA HAS THE MOST NUMEROUS INTACT, PRECONTACT CULTURAL AND ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES IN HAWAII AND NEEDS TO BE PRESERVED AS A LANDSCAPE, NOT DIVIDED AND IMPACTED WITH DEVELOPMENT OR A LUXURY HOME. 100% of the asking price is secured for a preservation sale and work was well underway to purchase the parcel for public benefit in-perpetuity when the landowner pulled out to sell to a private party.
For more than 50+ years the community has worked to protect this coastline and keep it free of development. This work is well documented, some of which can be found here http://kohalacoastandopenspace.yolasite.com and in this documentary https://youtu.be/lSaPIns80aY Also, this article in the Kohala Mountain News provides more information about the community’s concern about this private sale supplanting a purchase for public benefit protecting cultural sites, Another Coastal Land Sale Sparks Opposition, https://kohalamountainnews.com/assets/files/2021-08.pdf and Lamalaloa Parcel in Danger of Being Sold to a Third Party, https://kohalamountainnews.com/assets/files/2021-09.pdf
LET’S SEND A POLITE AND VERY LOUD REQUEST TO THE LANDOWNER AND THE PRIVATE PARTY TO ALLOW THE COMMUNITY TO FINISH THE PRESERVATION SALE THAT WAS UNDERWAY BEFORE THE PRIVATE PARTY OFFER HALTED THE PROCESS. LET’S ALL SUPPORT A WIN-WIN-WIN OUTCOME FOR LAMALOLOA: THE LANDOWNER GETS FULL ASKING PRICE, THE COMMUNITY’S 50+ YEARS OF WORK TO PRESERVE THIS AREA IS HONORED, THE NATURAL RESOURCES ARE PROTECTED, AND THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE REMAINS INTACT AND UNINTERRUPTED BY PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT.
There are ancient trails, including the Ala Loa, on the site that are protected by Queen Liliuokalani’s Hawaii Highways Act of 1892 for the benefit of the public, which means the State owns part of that land. This Act is still recognized, acknowledged, and enforced by the State in several locations in Hawaii, such as the Mamaloahoa Trail in Kona, and is codified in Hawaii Revised Statutes 264-1.
The listing for the property is here, https://reserver4.hawaiiinformation.com/REsearch6/Sites/HIS/Areas/SearchHIS/ASP/Results/Search_MLS.asp?SID=REsearchDetail&DID=MLS&SRC=EXT&DT=7922&LS=RE&H=3e22045820e5bdc6aae88c9026c91b87&P=73151690&CF=0&STRM=MLS&KEY=646148&DFRM=mls
