Much can be said about the motels spread throughout Colfax Avenue. However, not much has been done about the inherent problems that are produced from these said motels.  After another recent set of murders at the Blue Sky Motel (Jan. 26th, 2021) and the Trails End Motel (Dec. 21st, 2020), the time to demand change is long overdue. It is time to lift our entire community out of the muck.

Some of our local residents, through no choice of their own, are surrounded by a plethora of drugs, prostitution, and filthy and uninhabitable living conditions. Further, we are not giving guests of these dirty motels a chance to prosper in our community if we allow them to stay trapped in this current, dire situation. Many of these motel owners have failed inspections and ordinances that should have otherwise mitigated some of the crime, but it has only gotten worse the past few months.  I know as I have voiced my concern, there is a growing, concerned, and local populace from the community who have voiced their worry of the public hazards that are these businesses sprayed across Colfax, most notably the Blue Sky Motel and the Trails End Motel.

There is zero accountability from the motel owners, and sadly, these are the individuals who are most at fault in this tragic situation. However, I feel as citizens, we too are to blame, as we also continue to not do enough after recurring issues have created systemic issues for the larger community. Turning a blind eye to not only blight, but the drugs/drug deals, prostitution, murders, stolen vehicles, stolen bicycles, other stolen property as well as the many other criminal activities occurring in and around these properties is creating undue hazard to surrounding neighbors. It is incredibly problematic that these motels have been allowed to continue to hold a lodging license, and we need to ensure that these locations become businesses that provide positive service to the entire community. The multiple inspection failures and failure to adhere to lodging ordinances placed on the motel should be further pushed onto these businesses by local residents, and City council.

After hearing of success stories from our neighbors, most notably a group of motivated neighbors who managed to save these local businesses the right way (look no further than local flipped motels to affordable apartments, like the Kings Rest Motel); a conversion of these aforementioned motels into affordable housing projects is vital.  Since our council members have made us aware that Ward 2 (NorthEast Lakewood) has been awarded potential affordable housing projects, it is time to revitalize our community, and remove of the public safety hazard that are the motels infested with blight, and replace them with affordable housing options. Affordable housing is vital to commit clean, dependable, and essential resources to folks who need it most, as well as mitigate, and hopefully rid of the frequent troublesome activity we experience all along Colfax. Further, it would allow Apartment/Leasing Managers of this prospective complex the opportunity to work with its' tenants; help provide a clean and safe residence/environment, ensure they are finding an employment opportunity, do thorough background checks, ensure they are staying clean and avoiding drug/criminal activity, etc.

Put quite simply, the only way we can be a part of this change is if our collective local voices are heard. Please sign this petition to let our council members, and the City of Lakewood know we as a community want to be the positive change this side of Lakewood deserves, and want to see. Let’s keep each other safe, happy, and progress together!

Please email your concerns to CityCouncil@Lakewood.org, as well as sign this petition to find a way we keep all of our neighbors in mind, and find the best solution for all.
