Builders for the new Lakeridge Middle School presented the design that has been approved by the district. The building features an "all-user bathroom design" where both girls and boys use the same bathroom. Stalls within the bathroom have total acoustic privacy with floor to ceiling walls and doors, including private exhausts. The wash basins are located in an open area outside of the stalls and open to the halls however, the stalls are not visible from the halls. Several concerns have surfaced highlighting the need to change the layout before it's too late. Aside from the basic concern of kids being uncomfortable in a bathroom next to their peers, the following needs to be considered:
- Bullying
- Sexual assault
- Consensual sex
- Suicide
- Drug use
The builders mention that "most of the mischief that happens is at the sink" which is why those are left open to the halls for supervision. That may be the case with the traditional bathroom layout but will that statement hold true with the new design? The bathrooms can continue to be 100% inclusive if we alter the bathroom/stall design and have the doors open to the halls or provide more separate bathrooms (ADA) than currently illustrated on the design.
You can view the building presentation here. The bathroom overview starts at the 34-36 minute mark.
