Kill the Housing Bill Kensington & Chelsea

Pay to Stay

Where council or housing trust tenant households earn more than £40,000 a year in London they will be expected to pay above their set rate of rent and for some even 'market rents'.

Housing Trusts will be allowed to make discretionary decisions about whether to implement this 'pay-to-stay' policy. You can email your housing trust about this.

Short-holds for social housing tenants

There will be no more security of tenure for life for new council  or housing trust tenants.  New tenants will get a tenancy for only two to five years and could be forced into the private rented sector after that.

Housing Transfers and Domestic Violence

Transferring tenants - including victims of domestic violence and stalking could also lose their secure or assured lifetime tenancies.

This would result in a life of transience with increased stress and poor health and likely damage to children’s education.

Case studies and interviews concerning vulnerable women who have lost their social housing tenancies to follow.

Note re other vulnerable groups: RBKC has not signed up to Safe & Secure to help exiting gang members to move.

No signing over of housing trust or council tenancies to family members

Children and family members could be made homeless upon death of the lead tenant in a property.

Low Priority for new builds of Social Housing

Money previously used to build housing association and council homes will go to building homes for sale.

Councils will be made to sell off ‘high value’ council homes when they become empty (many in central London). This is to pay for the discounts that housing associations will offer their tenants who exercise the right to buy.  In an inner London borough, like Camden, this could mean the loss of a third of the council homes that become empty in any one year. This means that there is a much lower chance of council tenant getting a transfer if their housing needs change.

More homeless persons and families and those in 'temporary' accommodation getting 'shipped out' out of London as a result.

Sign the petition and 'spread the word' to show that you are against this - and also email victoria.borwick.mp@parliament.uk or Greg Hands on handsg@parliament.uk to explain how the housing bill affects or potentially damages your life - and that of your family members - friends and neighbours.

Please do both - and help elderly and vulnerable persons to do the same.
