The Issue

I have always been conscious about the choices I make regarding the food I consume. With growing awareness around animal rights and ethical consumption, it has become increasingly important for me to know how my food is sourced. One issue that really resonates with me is the method of slaughter used for Halal and Kosher meat. I believe that religious slaughter causes unnecessary suffering to animals, and as consumers, we should have the right to make informed decisions based on our personal beliefs and preferences.

In the United Kingdom, while many supermarkets stock Halal and Kosher meat, it is often not clearly labelled, making it difficult for customers to know if the meat they are purchasing is slaughtered according to these religious rites. According to the Food Standards Agency, about 25% of sheep and goats in the UK are slaughtered without stunning, which is typical practice for Halal and Kosher meat. This statistic is quite alarming for consumers who wish to avoid meat from animals that have not been stunned before slaughter.

The lack of transparency not only infringes on consumer rights but also prevents individuals from making choices that align with their ethical and religious beliefs. In 2019, a survey by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) found that approximately 41% of UK consumers wanted clearer labelling for the treatment and slaughter of animals. Yet, the lack of regulation and guidelines for the labelling of Halal and Kosher meat continues to be a problem.

To address these concerns, I urge the British government and food regulatory bodies to enforce mandatory labelling of all Halal and Kosher meat in supermarkets. Clear and conspicuous labelling will enable consumers to make choices that are consistent with their values and beliefs, ensuring both transparency and fairness in the food supply chain.

Join me in this petition to demand clearer labelling of Halal and Kosher meat in supermarkets. Your support can help us advocate for a change that respects animal welfare, consumer rights, and ethical consumption. Please sign this petition to help make informed buying decisions a reality for everyone.
