Save Our WAM! - La Trobe University should listen to students!
The Issue
What are we asking for?
This last month, the La Trobe Student Union (LTSU) has been calling for a change in University WAM policy as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. As a Union, we are calling for the University to commit to a model similar to that which other Universities like Melbourne University have implemented. We are demanding that the WAM of any student should not be lowered, regardless of a pass or fail grade.
What is your WAM?
WAM, also known as Weighted Average Mark, is the averaged sum of all your subjects grades at La Trobe. Depending on your performance, your WAM goes up and down, so the higher your grades, the better your WAM will be. Your WAM will affect things such as changes in degree, moving into postgraduate studies, and job opportunities after your graduation at La Trobe.
Why is this important?
Simply, this change to WAM policy would mean that if you pass your Semester One subjects but achieve lower grades than your average, your WAM will not decrease. Students will be able to view their results and choose to have their passing grades changed to a 'non-graded pass' which will not impact their WAM, but will be able to choose to have their good results count towards their WAM.
Online learning comes with difficulties already and students shouldn’t be further penalised in this incredibly intense period. Students are navigating possible financial instability, technological issues, and isolation amongst many other problems. Your WAM decreasing is another unnecessary source of anxiety and stress being enforced by La Trobe, which is negatively influencing the overall well-being of students.
The Student Union strives to be your voice during this crisis and we demand the University listen to the needs of its students and provide the support they have promised.
