Retain Fungal Ecology unit in BOT3FEB

Retain Fungal Ecology unit in BOT3FEB
The issue
Fungi play an essential role in ecological processes. They form mutualistic associations with ~90% of plant taxa around the world, are crucial for soil formation, nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration.
They also provide habitat and food for invertebrates, and vertebrates such as the endangered Long-footed Potoroo.
All future conservation efforts rely on a solid understanding of fungal ecology including their many plant and animal associations.
La Trobe has made the decision to discontinue this fascinating and crucial mycology unit, and we think that this would be an incredible loss to future conservationists, ecologists, land managers and those who are passionate about conserving the entirety of biodiversity: plants, animals AND fungi.
