As citizens of La Mesa who take great pride in our city, we are upset and deeply frustrated at the failure of the leaders in City Hall and in the La Mesa Police Department to provide community members with adequate information regarding investigations of the May 27, 2020 arrest of Amaurie Johnson and the May 30, 2020 assault of protestor Leslie Furcron. 

Our city’s leadership must explain publicly, in a clear and open manner, actions being taken in response to these troubling incidents.  Moreover, the long-term health of our community requires our leaders to publicly articulate and implement meaningful corrective actions that will prevent the recurrence of violent and abusive behavior toward people of color and peaceful protestors by law enforcement officers.

Thoughtful, frequent and candid communication will be essential to bring about the healing and growth that La Mesa, its residents and visitors deserve. 

We are distressed that, at this crucial time, our leaders are hiding rather than leading.  Their scarce communications have been incoherent, disorganized and directionless. 

Please support this petition to demand that leaders in La Mesa's City Hall and the La Mesa Police Department immediately explain to all La Mesa residents:

1. What they are doing to ensure both of the recent incidents of apparent police misconduct are being investigated thoroughly; and

2. The specific initiatives and changes they are proposing to deliver an unbiased, safe and responsible brand of law enforcement and peace-building in our town.
