Dear fellow animal lovers,
I am reaching out to express my deep concern regarding a troubling new policy implemented by George Harding, the Director of Animal Control for San Bernardino County, that directly affects the welfare of our feline friends. In a conversation I had with him today, he confirmed that the mBig Bear Animal Shelter will now refuse to accept any adult cat over the age of eight months. This decision is alarming and poses a serious threat to the well-being of countless cats in our community.
Despite the fact that our specific shelter has not euthanized a cat in over eight years—thanks to the dedication of a local rescue less than half a mile away—Mr. Harding insists on allowing cats to fend for themselves in the harsh conditions of our snow-capped mountains. This is a death sentence for these animals, especially given the extreme cold, coyotes, eagles, hawks, owls and the lack of resources they will face this winter.
I urged Mr. Harding to reconsider this policy, explaining the dangers it poses, but he dismissed my concerns, stating that the policy will remain in place regardless of public opinion. It is essential that we make our voices heard on this issue to protect these vulnerable creatures.
I urge all Californians who care about animals—whether they are feral or domesticated—to take action. Please call George Harding at 909-501-0660to express your concerns about this new policy. Remind him that our Big Bear community has a proven track record of caring for our cats, and that we will not stand by while they are left to suffer in the cold and annual snowfall reaching 6 feet or more.
Together, we can make a difference and ensure that all animals in our community receive the care and protection they deserve. Please sign this petition and share it widely to raise awareness. Our cats need your voice!
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Theodore Trentman
