Ban the sale of animals from breeders
The Issue
Each year in the US, over 2.7 million animals are euthanized because too many pets arrive at the shelter, and too few people consider adopting when looking for a pet. Arizona has one of the highest euthanasia rates in the country. Current Arizona law allows stores to sell animals from “reputable” breeders that uphold standards set by the USDA. The truth of the matter is that these animals still undergo harsh conditions, and are kept kept in cages 24/7. Cages can be stacked by threes, cleaning is only required once a week, and the length of the cage is less than 6 inches bigger than the animal itself. The shelters are FULL and they free up space by euthanizing perfectly healthy animals. By purchasing animals from stores, not only are you supporting the gruesome and unethical procedure breeding parents endure, but you are supporting the death of a homeless animal. Arizona should have banned the sale of animals from puppy mills and breeders years ago. Stores should work in partnership with local shelters to help end this epidemic, and educate the community about the importance of spaying/neutering as well as microchipping.
